Program notes
Cardinal Songs was commissioned by The Chicago Flute Club in celebration of their 30th anniversary and is dedicated to Dr. Cate Hummel, who suggested the commission to the composer.
The work imitates the song of the Northern Cardinal and combines it with several Venezuelan birds. The electronic part is conceived as an expanded flute, rather than an accompaniment to a separate musical line.
The cardinal samples were recorded by Bruce Lagerquist, and the Venezuelan birds were recorded by the composer Miguel Noya. Rubén Riera realized the mix of the electronic part and Diego Benalcázar did the mastering. Many thanks to this wonderful team.
