Maroon Dreams (2003) are three songs based on texts by Susana Amundaraín that evoke reveries of youth, ceremonial experience and dream states. I have wanted to set music to Susana’s writings ever since we collaborated back in the year 1999. I always found her poetry very special and inspiring. Back then we had a great experience collaborating with my tenor friend and colleague, Douglas Ahlstedt in my multimedia opera Clepsydra.
The opportunity to create something for Douglas came when The Renaissance City Winds commissioned me to write a new piece. They wanted to feature him in their 2003-2004 season. This was the last piece I wrote for the Renaissance City Winds as part of a three-year grant through Meet The Composer, made possible by the Heinz Endowment New Residency program.
