In september, 1986 two extraordinary Venezuelan flutists: Pedro Eustache and Luis Julio Toro invited me to write them a short piece to premiere at their duo recital “Music of Our Friends” scheduled for november 12.

I suspected a healthy professional rivalry between them so I decided to write a work where one challenged the other in a permanent struggle, but not exempt of humor.

When I showed them the music they told me that the rhythm was so caribbean that they wanted to add some improvised congas obligati and they had just the right musician to do it. I said that there was no problem by me as long as they announced that it was their idea so if it was successful it was thanks to them but if it didn't work out then I had nothing to do with it. The premiere was with the congas and a huge success.

In 2004, another great Venezuelan flutist and even greater friend, Javier Montilla played with Enver Cuervos. It only had to wait 18 years (like an exceptional whisky?) for its second chance. This time it was played as written: no congas.

As founding members, Javier and Enver have included this piece in the repertoire of the LatinAmerican Academy of Flute of the National Youth Orchestras and Choirs System . Last year (2011) two young flutists, Ana Paola Rincones and Eva Moreno, played it brilliantly at the Academy's Flute Festival.

¡Que sí te lo digo!

En septiembre de 1986 dos extraordinarios flautistas venezolanos: Pedro Eustache y Luis Julio Toro me invitaron a escribirles una obra breve para estrenarla en su recital “Música de Nuestros Amigos” para el día 12 de Noviembre.

Yo intuía una sana rivalidad entre ellos y decidí escribir una obra donde uno le contestara a otro en un reto permanente, pero no desprovisto de humor.

Cuando les mostré la obra me comentaron que querían agregar unas congas obligati ya que sentían que la obra llevaba implícito un ritmo muy sabroso y tenían un amigo ideal para la parte. Les dije que por mí no había problema, siempre y cuando anunciaran en el recital que la idea era de ellos: si era exitoso el crédito era todo suyo y si no, yo no tenía nada que ver. Así se estrenó y la respuesta del público fue estupenda.

En el 2004, otro gran flautista venezolano y aún mejor amigo, Javier Montilla la toca junto a Enver Cuervos. Sólo tuvo que esperar 18 años (¿como un whisky excepcional?) para su segunda oportunidad. Se presentó en su versión original sin congas improvisadas y también resultó todo un éxito.

Javier y Enver la han incorporado al repertorio de la Academia Latinoamericana de Flauta del Sistema Nacional de Orquestas y Coros Juveniles e Infantiles de Venezuela y de la que son fundadores ambos. El año pasado (2011) Ana Paola Rincones y Eva Moreno brindaron una versión avasallante en el marco de un Festival de Flauta de la Academia.
